Cool It Down is certainly an apt title for Yeah Yeah Yeahs' fifth studio album. There's a real sense of a band comfortable within their own skin, and unlike some of their peers, this isn't a futile attempt to rekindle or recreate the swaggering insouciance and frenetic energy of their youth. Cool It Down is the sound of the band maturing elegantly without losing any of their creative fire.

New York City trio’s first album in nine years brings stylistic change but they still sound magnificent You’d be forgiven if you’d presumed that Yeah Yeah Yeahs had quietly decided to call it a day. It’s been nine years since their last album Mosquito, and with Karen O seemingly set on a solo career and Nick Zinner even joining new wave band The Rentals in 2018, it seemed as if the days of New York Cool were long behind us. And yet, Cool It Down, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ fifth album is indeed upon us, and it’s quite a stylistic change for the trio.
Opinion: Excellent
Yeah Yeah Yeahs hung up their mic a decade ago, leaving behind a flawless catalogue. The return of the much-loved Brooklyn types brought some crowd-pleasing shows – including a sold out O2 Academy Brixton date – but it also raised the spectre of something new. A band forever chasing down the future, the three-piece re-assembled last year, focussed on crafting something to follow-up 2013's magnificent (if overlooked) 'Mosquito'.
