We Are Scientists return with their first effort since 2016's Heltzer Seltzer, their sixth studio album Megaplex. Although they have been around for nearly two decades, they haven't lost their charm, and continue to develop their sound through plangent synthesizers and programmed drums. Unlike their previous albums, Megaplex takes a new direction and mature approach to their style. The entire album has a '80s synth-pop feel to it, leaving you hooked after each track. The electro-pop opener "One In, One Out" is an infectious dance-heavy ….
We Are Scientists head in a dance-rock direction with their sixth album, Megaplex, a livelier and more full-bodied affair than 2016's Helter Seltzer. Less Editors and Bloc Party and more Walk the Moon and Capital Cities, Megaplex finds We Are Scientists experimenting with digital layers, polished production, and a more synth-driven approach to their generally angular post-punk sound. While enjoyable and light, the set is fairly by-the-numbers.
18 years and six albums in, it makes sense that We Are Scientists should know exactly what they want to sound like. Where previously the band claim to have used their records "to educate, to enlighten, to awaken people to the depth and complexity of moral concerns", 'Megaplex' eschews the soapbox in favour of ten tracks of button-bright indie-pop. The appeal of 'Megaplex' is instantaneous.
