TIM ROBBINS AND THE ROGUES GALLERY BAND plays the Mod Club Tuesday (August 2). See listing Rating: NNN Shawshank Redemption star Tim Robbins grew up at the Gaslight in New York, where his father was the manager, and he's been writing songs since his mid-20s, but this is the 50ish actor's first album. More a lyricist than a singer, he gruffly talk-sings through much of it, making it hard to grab hold of melodies.

The problem with famous actors becoming singers is the head-start they get. Most singer-songwriters worthy of a following spend years honing their craft with endless gigs before hostile audiences, writing thousands of songs before getting a handful deserving of a place on a debut album. Tim Robbins, performing before a disproportionately enthusiastic crowd with a group of top-table musicians, is this problem made flesh.

Robbins’ first foray into music is a misstep compared to his successful acting career. Andrew Mueller 2010 It is, yes, that Tim Robbins: star of The Player, The Shawshank Redemption, Mystic River; director of Dead Man Walking; Hollywood superstar; Oscar-winner, etc. He has left it a long time to realise the apparently long-burning ambition of his debut album, and it’s difficult to avoid wishing he’d left it a good while longer.
