Album Review: From Where I Started by Sera Cahoone

For those that would say you can never go home again, singer-songwriter Sera Cahoone begs to differ. Her new solo album From Where I Started is a deceptively uncluttered collection of classic country-inspired folk that manages to look both backwards and forwards, one foot firmly grounded in her previously-charted musical territories and the other headed mid-stride towards new sonic terrain. Although From Where I Started is the fourth entry in her solo catalog, it feels most like a spiritual successor to her self-titled debut.

The title From Where I Started suggests Sera Cahoone is getting back to her roots with her third solo album, but that isn't precisely true. Cahoone may have shifted labels -- she's moved from Sub Pop to Lady Muleskinner Records -- but she's retained her gift for hushed intimacy. Such subdued surroundings command close listening and, when it's given, From Where I Started reveals a record that's slightly different than what's come before it.

From the somber guitar playing to her reflective lyrics about the comfort of finding home (which is the main theme at hand), there is a lot to like in Sera Cahoone's new collection, From Where I Started. It remains consistent with her previous three records, and she excels at inviting her listeners into her world and the places she identifies as safe and welcoming. Her passionate, soft, and evocative voice and slowly measured acoustic guitar pace the brisk 36-minute album nicely.
