Make Like Lucy and Forget It
by: peter naldrett
I saw the trailer to this film the other day and immediately made up my mind never to watch it. I should have trusted my judgement and not taken the soundtrack CD out of its case, but I’m afraid I succumbed to temptation. Hailed as being a collection of love songs from the new film starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, the line-up for the original soundtrack is as flimsy as the acting seems, as thin as the plot.
The most notable points on the album are covers of famous songs by the likes of UB40, Seal and Wyclef Jean. There are many reasons to reach for the remote and skip forward to the end of this CD, but the UB40 cover of "Every Breath You Take" is one of the worst. The Birmingham band bring their familiar reggae style to the Police classic and promptly murder it in a rather brutal and careless musical killing. Little better is Ziggy Marley’s version of "Drive" (the song from The Cars, not REM), with Wyclef Jean adding to the overall reggae them of the CD with a disappointing "Your Love" (L.O.V.E Reggae Mix).
The only real saving grace is Wayne Wonder’s opening version of the Thompson Twins classic "Hold Me Now", which is up to a decent standard. The real sinker of this album, is saved until last, when Adam Sandler takes up his guitar to sing a song he joint wrote, "Forgetful Lucy". It doesn’t even last two minutes, but still manages to be cringeworthy, highly embarrassing, not at all funny and a perfect advertisement for going to see any other film this weekend rather than 50 First Dates. Avoid at all costs. 12-May-2004 8:29 PM
