Circa Survive man steps out on his own... Far from the EBM act you might imagine based on the name alone, Psychic Babble is the solo alter ego of Circa Survive guitarist Colin Frangicetto, who serves up 10 tracks of lush indie-electronica. Self-produced and released on his own label, it’s a consistently dreamy affair in the likes of opener ‘Five Fold Kiss (Don’t Sleep)’ and ‘Samantha’, but avoids becoming too languid through the strength and stylistic diversity of tunes like ‘Radio Songs’ and ‘Follow Your Bliss’.
Psychic Babble is the name Circa Survive guitarist Colin Frangicetto has chosen for his solo project. It’s a name that evokes swirling, psychedelic music, filled with synths and with at least a couple of the spacier tracks lingering past the eight-minute mark. The reality bears very little resemblance to the preconceived notions, however. Album opener “Five Fold Kiss (Don’t Sleep)” begins with washes of synth and a quickly moving click track, but then it settles right into a mid-tempo indie-pop song with a backbone of quiet, icy guitars.
In an abstract way, it makes total sense that the creative mind behind Psychic Babble is Circa Survive guitarist Colin Frangicetto. While his main squeeze gravitates toward oceanic metal riffs and skyscraping prog signifiers, they also aren’t afraid to wield restraint—and silence—for maximum sonic impact. In other words, Circa excel at creating music with dynamic variation—something Psychic Babble’s debut full-length, My Brother’s Ears/My Sister’s Eyes, also has in spades.
