Hermosa Beach punk stalwarts Pennywise take a look back and a look forward on their 12th studio album. Released in 2014, Yesterdays marks the return of founding lead singer Jim Lindberg (who had left the group in 2009) as Pennywise harks back to the muscular sound and positive outlook of the group's early days. The album also pays homage to Jason Thirsk, Pennywise's founding bassist, who left the group in 1996 to deal with his alcoholism, only to take his own life several months later.
Few bands are as synonymous with mega-indie punk label Epitaph as Pennywise. During their '90s heyday, the Hermosa Beach, CA band's driving skate-punk sound helped define the label's identity, codifying '90s punk in the process. Internal squabbles led to lead singer Jim Lindberg's departure and 2012's not terrible All or Nothing with new singer Zoli Téglás.Now Lindberg is back in the fold and the band are looking to press the reset button with eleventh album Yesterdays.
When Pennywise brought singer Jim Lindberg back into the fold, it could have gone one of two ways. Either the band would come out blazing with a stellar new album that would make everyone say, “Zoli who?” or they would take a look at their storied punk-rock past and do some kind of ode to their beginnings. It’s pretty easy to guess which of the two scenarios plays out on Yesterdays, even just based on the album’s title.
