Soph Nathan’s second album is proof positive that The Big Moon have actually had two excellent songwriters in their ranks for some time If you’re a fan of London four-piece The Big Moon, you’ll probably already be aware of Soph Nathan, the lead guitarist of that band. But because songwriting duties in The Big Moon are taken care of by lead singer Juliette Jackson, Our Girl has been the outlet for Nathan’s own creative endeavours. The Good Kind is Our Girl’s second album, following up their debut album from 2018, Stranger Today.
Indie trio Our Girl comprising of singer-guitarist Soph Nathan (The Big Moon), drummer Lauren Wilson and bassist Joshua Tyler showed they are a force to be reckoned with on their 2018 debut LP ‘Stranger Today’ . While Soph Nathan has in the interim been working with The Big Moon, the group have come together to release their follow-up ‘The Good Kind’, does it deliver on fan expectations, a resounding yes. The album was produced by alt-rock titan John Parish (PJ Harvey, Sparklehouse) with Nathan's Big Moon bandmate Fern Ford and Nathan herself.
Our Girl's debut album, 'Stranger Today' came in a period of time during which frontwoman Soph Nathan appeared to have a superhuman ability to be everywhere at once, its 2018 release following both The Big Moon's debut album and Marika Hackman's 'I'm Not Your Man' (on which the TBM play). Six years on, and despite her other band's schedule appearing to slow - Top Ten third album 'Here Is Everything' having been released in 2022 - still the announcement of Our Girl's 'The Good Kind' appeared to come from nowhere. That's the most surprising thing on offer, the record saturated with a familiar warmth that on occasion belies its largely melancholy tone.
