Album Review: How Do You Plead? by My Darling Clementine

I’ve said it before. If anyone’s going to reinvigorate country music it may very well be the British and not the Americans who are up to the task. My Darling Clementine––the husband and wife duo consisting of Michael Weston King (husband) and Lou Dalgleish (wife)––is further proof of this undisputable truth. Neither King nor Dalgleish is new to the pursuit.

The Brits have a history of taking American music and selling it back to the US, which they did particularly well with blues and soul in the sixties. They have been less successful with country– that remains a stateside staple– but not if My Darling Clementine has any say in it. Married couple Michael Weston King and wife Lou Dalgleish take the well-worn C&W male/female duet cliché and write a baker’s dozen of originals that sound like they came straight out of the June/Johnny-Emmylou/Gram-Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazelwood catalogs.

Michael Weston King sounds as if he was born at the wrong time, in the wrong place. The former leader of the British alt-country band the Good Sons, he is now joined by his partner Lou Dalgleish for an album of country duets that sound as if they were written in the 60s or 70s. It's a finely crafted tribute to the classic country duos such as Johnny Cash and June Carter or George Jones and Tammy Wynette, with all the songs written by King and Dalgleish and several sounding like lost classics.
