When it comes to musical chops, Matt Berry’s got nothing to prove. Five albums into an ever-intriguing solo career, he’s also composed music for a bunch of TV shows, while, on Live (recorded at several locations, among them Green Man Festival and London’s Kentish Town Forum), his discursive Korg excursions attest to no small amount of talent. In fact, The Maypoles as a whole are near-virtuosic at times, switching from funk struts to Yes-indebted wig-outs with ease.

That joke isn’t funny anymore. “If you come to one of our gigs expecting a character, or a stand-up routine then you could be very disappointed,” says actor and comedian Matt Berry (The IT Crowd, Toast Of London) of his free-form musical outings with The Maypoles. Or perhaps not: Berry’s musical endeavours are often unintentionally hilarious.
