Album Review: Everlasting by Martina McBride

Everlasting is the second collection of covers Martina McBride has recorded, following 2005's Timeless by nearly ten years. A decade isn't the only thing separating the two records. Timeless was a collection of country covers but Everlasting has soul in its heart, with the singer tackling R&B standards from Aretha Franklin ("Do Right Woman, Do Right Man"), Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes ("If You Don't Know Me by Now"), the Supremes ("Come See About Me"), Otis Redding ("I've Been Loving You Too Long"), and Sam Cooke ("Bring It on Home to Me").

According to Maroon 5, “Nothing lasts forever.” Yep, the pop band’s simple lyric from an obscure non-single from sophomore album It Won’t Be Soon Before Long is a perfect description for the longevity of popularity within the music industry. Another way to phrase it is that popularity wanes much like cotton candy melts in ones mouth. Bummer! For country superstar Martina McBride, sales haven’t been nearly as electrifying as they once were.

Martina McBride has one of those proverbial “could sing the phone book” voices. Fortunately, the country star has chosen much richer material for her second covers album, “Everlasting. ’’ After reverently dipping into the classic country songbook on 2005’s “Timeless,” the thematically similar “Everlasting” — produced by Don Was and her first self-release on Vinyl Recordings — finds the mighty-voiced McBride deftly tackling a clutch of pop, soul, and blues tunes complete with horns, a sultry Southern organ sound, and heavenly harmonies from the McCrary Sisters.
