Album Review: Before Love Came To Kill Us by Jessie Reyez

Jessie Reyez's debut full-length, Before Love Came to Kill Us, has been built to last. Reyez told Exclaim! in our recent cover story that she had more than a bit of trepidation and pressure in dropping a full-length project — a fear of failing, a fear of not living up to the hype that her bestselling "Figures" started just a few years ago. "I should have fucked your friends," is literally the first line for the opening track, "Do You Love Her," setting the stage, the tone, the implicit acknowledge that this is a major label effort, but the Toronto singer-songwriter is keeping it real AF.

Jessie Reyez is a 28 year old, second generation Colombian-Canadian with a distinctive sound. Her outstanding debut album 'Before Love Came To Kill Us' explores a relationship breakdown and the heartbreak that ensues, and in opener, 'Do You Love Her', Reyez is seemingly feeling pretty vengeful. She begins with, "I should have f*cked your friends/It would have been the best revenge", before considering taking the life of her ex to satiate her heartbreak:"If I blow your brains out, I could guarantee that you'd forget her." A s the pop landscape becomes progressively bolder and more crowded, it becomes more difficult for any new artist to make an impact. The bandwidth is saturated. Billie Eilish is a hard act to follow; she has rewritten a lot of rules. "Attitude" is standard among R&B singers, and is just as often a pose.
