Album Review: My First Album by Jessica Winter

Fairly Good, Based on 4 Critics

This debut is certainly very poppy, but also nods towards indie-rock, industrial and disco. Pigeonholing its creator is a tricky task If you’ve even the slightest interest in alternative music, it’s likely you’ll have heard Jessica Winter, even if you’ve not realised it. She’s worked with The Horrors, Fat White Family and The Big Moon, and also toured with acts as diverse as Death Grips and Rebecca Black.

Clash Music
Opinion: Excellent

The aptly titled 'My First Album' is a long time coming - but across a Baker's Dozen of deliciously dark synth pop constructions, Jessica Winter makes it well worth the wait. An effortlessly chic songwriter, each detail her feels endlessly finessed. A striking alt-pop auteur, Jessica Winter is able to bring December's darkness into the bright light of midsummer.

DIY Magazine
Opinion: Very Good

'My First Album' arrives long after Jessica Winter first emerged onto London's circuit of musical misfits, often accompanied by the flamboyant, the kitsch and the quirky - and it's a scene she injects heavily into her exuberant art-pop. Across 13 tracks, Jessica flows between the likes of the Kylie Minogue-aligned 'Aftersun', the camped-up punk of 'Got Something Good', and the unapologetic classic rock theatrics of 'Worst Person In The World'. The sense of cabaret that has characterised much of her live performances to date comes well into its own here, never overshadowing the musical quality but diving headfirst into its sheer randomness.

The Quietus
Opinion: Fairly Good

What was the first album you bought? Jessica Winter answers that slightly tired question by way of the songs on her debut album, which appears to flip through the CD collection (or wheel through the iPod) of a teenager in the 2000s. Across forty-five minutes we encounter sun-coming-up piano beats, Fever-era Kylie Minogue, inklings of Gwen Stefani and Lily Allen, crunchy alt-90s guitars, a bit of Beck, and even - shudder - The Feeling. My First Album is a title that also raises an eyebrow to the fact Winter's releasing her solo debut after well over a decade in the industry.
