Four of Arrows marks a massive step forward for Seattle five-piece Great Grandpa. While their debut, Plastic Cough, channelled emotion through tongue-in-cheek quips by way of grunge-inspired anthems, Four of Arrows turns to a more openly vulnerable tone with a restorative lustre.   Many of Four of Arrows songs feature unpredictable shifts mid-song, mindfully stitched together and strewn with salient hooks. As charming of a grungy debut as Great Grandpa's Plastic Cough album was, it did little to reveal where this band might go next. And on Four of Arrows, the band actually goes in quite a few different directions and proves effective at most. The band consists of husband and wife songwriters Pat and Carrie Goodwin along with lead guitarist Dylan Hanwright and drummer Cam LeFlam (cool rock 'n' roll name that one).

Two years ago, Great Grandpa were a different band. The Seattle quintet's 2017 debut album, Plastic Cough, nestled right into the wave of anxious, quippy rock bands like Charly Bliss, Diet Cig, Dude York, and many more that still roam the indie landscape. But there was something about lead singer Alex Menne's voice, their clear and emotional delivery on casual lines like "Always killin' it" that was particularly striking.
