With influences spanning from the euphoric shimmer of Haim to the raw emotional candor of Mitski and even the brooding intensity of Sharon Van Etten, the band's debut album, It's Nothing, promises a rich tapestry of sound and sentiment. As one would expect from their previously released singles, Dolores Forever dives deep into themes of identity, existential dread, and the jagged edges of love, all wrapped in a sonically diverse package that melds pop sheen with indie grit. The album kicks off with "Not Now Kids" a track that perfectly encapsulates the band's knack for blending melancholy with anthemic hooks as it eviscerates world leaders burning down the house while telling everyone else to shut up.
That apparently dismissive title says it all: since the release of their first single in 2021 , Dolores Forever have perfected the art of careful ambiguity, a skilled combination of subtle humour and throwaway lines with serious musicianship, which results in relatable and always innovative music. ‘It’s Nothing’ is a good old-fashioned album in the best sense: 10 tracks, each well crafted and strong enough to stand alone, combined into a coherent whole. The record is richly modern and at the same time soaked in a 1980s vibe.
That Hannah Wilson and Julia Fabrin are both established songwriters for hire is seemingly both a blessing and a curse. The pair's debut album as Dolores Forever, 'It's Nothing' is packed with well-paced, just-the-right-side-of-formulaic pop tracks from the off. Opener 'Not Now Kids' shimmies in on its best Janelle Monáe impression, its earwormy chorus presented like the dividing line between '00s electroclash and, well, '00s indie.
