Public figures who deliberately alienate their patrons rarely get away with it, but it seemed like the ultimate power move when Doja Cat essentially flipped off her entire fanbase earlier this year. AD LOADING... Sure, she lost over a quarter of a million Instagram followers after condescending to loyalists who go by "Kittenz," a name she gave them, but the hype surrounding her only continued to grow even as her social media numbers plummeted.

Just shy of a decade ago, Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, otherwise known as Doja Cat, crept onto the TikTok scene with 'So High', which led to subsequent interest from Kemosabe and RCA Records. 'Say So' was also the beneficiary of TikTok virality, escalated to success by viral dance challenges , becoming a 'sleeper hit' for the artist. To get a sense of Doja Cat’s ascent, her videos on YouTube alone have amassed over 7 billion views to date.
