Album Review: Build a Problem by Dodie

Great, Based on 3 Critics

The Line of Best Fit - 90
Based on rating 9/10

Though Dodie 's distinctive fragile alt pop stylings are undoubtedly familiar at this point, the album is an invitation into Dodie 's world at its most rocky and volatile - exploring some of her most desolate lows and fully realized highs. The uncommon openness and intimacy she cultivates has long been a defining feature of her online presence and that element is all the more present in her music. The dodie style of plaintive lyrics, whispered vocals, and willowy instrumentation could easily come off as a mere affectation but there's no sign of falsity in Build A Problem.

Pitchfork - 66
Based on rating 6.6/10

From Logan Paul's Santa Claus diss track to the whoah-inducing pop of TikTok's Addison Rae, many viral internet stars have tried to maximize their influence by creating music. This usually leads to a lot of meme trap and middling R&B, but every now and again, there's an exception--like 25-year-old Dodie Clark, who has been uploading videos to her YouTube channel with nearly 2 million subscribers since 2011. Her debut studio album Build A Problem is an official unveiling of the sparse and self-conscious folk pop she has been posting online for nearly a decade, a career milestone for an artist who has, for the most part, been relegated to YouTube.

Clash Music
Opinion: Excellent

To describe dodie feels impossible as her music is so utterly her. Crafted over her 10 year YouTube presence and nurtured in a fan base entirely invested in her, her life and her vision, dodie's music feels separate from the current landscape. Instead falling into the lineage of classic female confessional songwriters like Joni Mitchell, dodie gives us pages out of her diary.
