Like other children of the Beatles, Dhani Harrison found himself drawn to music and, like all of the members of this select group, he was reluctant to capitalize on his famous father. He initially solved this problem by burying himself within the confines of thenewno2, a band he formed in 2002, but after a decade of playing with the group, he decided to pursue a solo career. Maybe this 15 years of experience is the reason why 2017's IN///PARALLEL doesn't feel tentative in the way so many first albums do.
A busy man on the film and TV soundtrack front over the last few years, Harrison’s debut solo album will, inescapably, be subject to comparisons and contrasts he has thus far managed to dodge. Even the Quiet One made a huge noise in The Beatles, setting an incredibly difficult benchmark. The good news is that Dhani’s singular screen music gives him a broader palette to draw upon than you might expect, but alarm bells start ringing as early as the opening Never Know, its monotone vocal nigglingly similar to what dad did on The Inner Light and Within You Without You.
