From "Don't Cry It's Christmas" onwards, the record shifts from a token seasonal song and the vocoder-centric "Spaceman" to a reggae double-header before landing at the Chris Martin collaboration -- and Coldplay imitation -- "Electricity." If this was a serious album, that kind of sequencing would be unforgivable, but the final verdict depends a lot on perspective. If this is Brent's album, existing for comedic reasons purely to accompany the film, then it fulfills its purpose. However, taken at face value, it's nothing more than a mish-mash of classic rock tropes and controversial lyrics.
It’s tricky to know how to approach Life On The Road, the Ricky Gervais/David Brent album that accompanies the movie of the same name. A curio companion-piece for fans of the film is all well and good, but we’ve been presented with a record in its own right. Is it fair to ask that it stand separate to its movie mothership? Gervais certainly thinks so, as this is no thrown-together package.
