A bold effort for album no.7 Dance Gavin Dance are powering forward with ‘Mothership’.Their seventh album sees more eccentricities brought into the fold, the flute-assisted intro of ‘Young Robot’ and the blastbeats on ‘Petting Zoo Justice’ in particular.Frontmen Tillian Pearson and Jon Mess effortlessly complement each other with unorthodox choruses, screams and lyrics, as on the utterly crazy ‘Flossie Dickie Bounce’ and huge chorus of ‘Betrayed By The Game’.The band’s mad formula is familiar now, but there’s still enough experimentation here to keep things interesting. .
Dance Gavin Dance have finally put to bed the ghosts of vocalists past. Tilian Pearson (formerly Tides of Man) took some time but he's placed his own vocal stamp down with Mothership, their seventh LP. It's nothing groundbreaking discography-wise but factoring in their ever-revolving door of singers, it's nice to see the band find a distinct style moving forward with Pearson.
Dance Gavin Dance, the Sacramento act who headline a sold-out Middle East show on Friday, put what for some is a dealbreaker right up front: The quintet includes a pair of lead singers, the sweet-voiced Tilian Pearson, who provides the “clean” vocals, and the bilious Jon Mess, whose throat-scraping yelps are the “dirty” vocals. It’s a studies-in-contrast pairing that’s been used by a lot of bands that spotlight the concerns of jittery, gimlet-eyed young men — post-hardcore acts, emo outfits, synth-heavy bands. Though their roots are in various genres, all derive their idea of musical beauty from raw power.
