Haley Fohr has never shied away from difficult subject matter. Her last record under the Circuit des Yeux moniker was a stunning and bewildering rumination on her experience of a seismic brain-shifting event. The indistinct nature of that experience did little to dampen Reaching For Indigo's potent and visionary achievements. In the interim she released her second record under her alter-ego Jackie Lynn, which is deceptively often viewed as her more commercial outlet.

The French are credited with coining the phrase l'appel du vide, naming the intrusive thought of the urge to step off of high ledges. It's an instinct supposedly born from crossed wires between the primal brain and the conscious mind--not one of self-harm necessarily, but one that reflects the conflict and chaos of human nature. Canyon edges, deep-sea trenches, black holes: They all captivate the imagination with the magnetism of being subject to nothing but gravity.

-io by Circuit des Yeux In previous albums, Haley Fohr sought to construct musical architecture within which her remarkable multiple-octave-spanning voice would find its true resonance. Her last two records, 2015's In Plain Speech and 2017's Reaching For Indigo, broadly fit within the category of "experimental folk"; they're suffused with intimacy and crafted with a relatively modest instrumental palette. With her ambitious new album, -io, Fohr has mustered music of sufficient grandeur, drama and aching fury to match the uneasy striving of her voice.
