When Celeste unveiled the understated beauty of 'Strange' towards the latter part of 2019, the track immediately propelled the US-born, UK-raised singer towards the UK's most sought-after accolades. Over a year later, 'Not Your Muse' arrives off the back of a BRITs Rising Star award win and topping the BBC Sound Of 2020 poll. Having taken a breath to decompress from the hype, her debut full-length sees her return with the lyrical openness and musical authenticity that underpinned her early material.
Whatever the reason, Celeste doesn't seem to mind. "Please don't mistake me for somebody who cares," she snarks with a sweet affect. Throughout Not Your Muse, Celeste makes claims that might prove otherwise: she cares for past and future lovers, the thrill of the chase, and stellar big band arrangements. What the album makes clear, however, is that one person deserves love above all else: herself.
The BBC’s Sound Of poll has, with a couple of honourable exceptions, been pretty successful at anointing the next big thing in music. Previous winners have included Ellie Goulding, HAIM, Michael Kiwanuka and a certain singer from south London called Adele. At the start of last year, it was announced that Celeste was the winner of the Sound of 2020 and it seemed a foregone conclusion that she would follow in her predecessors’ illustrious footsteps.
Celeste's debut album 'Not Your Muse' is a collection of beautifully written songs about love. The London-based singer has found early success after winning the BBC Sound of 2020 and landing the coveted spot singing the album track 'A Little Love' on the John Lewis Christmas advert. Having already been branded as the next Adele with an Amy Winehouse edge, the expectations of Celeste are high, and she certainly has big shoes to fill.
