Album Review: All About Tonight by Blake Shelton

Blake Shelton?s second ”six-pack” EP All About Tonight is tough to review as a unit, since there?s no cohesion. But as pleasantly disposable commercial country, these tracks bat a solid five-for-six. The disappointment, sadly, is ”Draggin? the River,” a duet with fiancée Miranda Lambert that?s supposed to be spunky but just kinda sinks. Blake Shelton and the folks at Reprise must have been encouraged by both the reception and sales of his "six pack" EP, Hillbilly Bone, because barely five months later, he followed with another one in All About Tonight. There are certain advantages to the format: the artist can be reliant on one single instead of three or four, and cohesion and flow are not as important as they would be on a traditional long-player. Finally, the price point is more attractive to fans.

Coming in at six songs and a lean 22:30 run-time, Blake Shelton’s All About Tonight is what I imagine being in the studio audience for an average sitcom would be like. There are those archetypal characters—the mean father-in-law, the sensitive cowboy—and perhaps a actually funny and heartfelt love story or two—fiancé Miranda Lambert guests on the standout track, “Draggin’ The River.” And yes, you’re aware that somebody worked very hard on these jokes, but still, every time you laugh, you feel like a little part of you just died, and it’s located in the left hemisphere of your brain.
