Albums can induce all kinds of emotions in the listener, but it is rare to find a new CD that instils something akin to blind panic before you even open its case. Al Green's I Can't Stop is one of those CDs. It's not hyperbole to say that Green possessed one of the 20th century's most distinctive and wonderful voices. Swooping from a controlled, gently seductive coo to ecstatic, improvised cries and moans, it seemed to encapsulate the struggle between sex and spirituality at soul music's heart.
